Viso goes back to school – for a visit

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — With all due respect to the musical genius of Steely Dan, who said you can’t go back to your old school?

KV Racing Technology’s E.J. Viso, who joined six other IZOD IndyCar Series drivers getting in about 30 test laps at Kansas Speedway before a plains storm rolled in April 22, last week visited Rolling Hills Prep in San Pedro, Calif.

Viso, from Venezuela, attended the oceanside school for a year while racing in the States.  He enjoyed math and science – “they relate to the race cars I drive today” – and, of course, the social aspects of school.

“I still have plenty of friends in the area and the school was great,” he said. “It’s where I learned how to surf because my school was basically next to the water. So, during breaks, we would go out for a half an hour and surf.

“I’m not a surfer, but I know how to surf. I do kite surfing, and I think that’s more fun because you can do more tricks and go faster. Surfing, you have to be more patient and have to wait for the right wave to come. I’m not the most patient person.

“(During breaks or after school) you could go play football (soccer) or go surfing. It was by far the most fun plus the girls liked it a lot.”

Viso, who will join KV Racing Technology teammates Mario Moraes and Takuma Sato in competing in the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway on May 1, also made a stop in Sedona, Ariz., on the way to Long Beach for the race weekend to “get recharged.”

“Sedona is one of the few places in the world where you can find one of these vortex spots,” he said. “I felt the energy. There are seven or eight vortex points and you feel different energy.”

A vortex is a giant magnet of energy that is either positive or negatively charged. Positive charged vortexes have feminine attributes: nurturing, calming and tranquil or yin. Negative vortexes are masculine, active, energizing or yang. There are 15 vortex sites within a 10-mile radius of Sedona.

“I just went there to relax and recharge my energy,” said Viso, who also attended a Los Angeles Lakers home game (photo above) courtesy of sponsor Herbalife.
