July 3, 2009
EUSTIS, Fla. (July 3, 2009) – Before one of the biggest days in the history of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal
Cask No. 16 history, several series compeititors Friday visited the organization’s best-known charities, Camp Boggy Creek. Twenty-three drivers toured 232-acre camp in central Florida, including Rolex 24 At Daytona winners David Donohue and Darren Law and 2007 Daytona Prototype co-champions Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty, whose No. 99 GAINSCO Pontiac Riley show car was displayed prominantly on a path where outgoing campers could see. Drivers, as well as team owners, PR reps, Grand-Am officials, family members and girlfriends, as well as others in the racing industry, visited the camp’s mess hall, medical center, swimming pool and theatre, and even danced with campers before participating in the fourth annual Frisselle brother – Brian and Burt – mini-golf tournament. Brad Jaeger won the nine-hole event. Competitors used the day as a day of learning and relaxation prior to the seventh of 12 Rolex Series races, the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway. The hectic one-day event begins at 8 a.m. with practice, with qualifying following. The 70-lap, 250-mile race, with a two-hour, 20-minutes time limit, begins at 2 p.m. ET (live on SPEED). Grand-Am Chief Officer of Operations Tom Bledsoe accepted a plaque from Camp Boggy Creek President President June Clark, commemorating Grand-Am’s involvement with Boggy Creek, and visitors were able to bid on items benefitting camp, including a painting over the 2008 Rolex Series Daytona Prototype and GT champions. TRG drivers Scott Schroeder and Josemanuel Gutierrez donated their earnings from the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. All penalty money, in addition to competitor donations, are sent to Boggy Creek. Grand-Am has raised over $850,000 in the pair’s 10-year relationship. “For us, this is our second year to come out here, and we are fortunate to be invited to come back,” said Andrew Davis of Stevenson Motorsports. “It is a very special place, for everyone involved. Plus, it is nice to be together and spend some relaxing time with our fellow competitors before a hectic one-day show.” Added Michael Shank Racing driver Ozz Negri: “It was just a great day, fun day with friends. It was awesome to be here and remember to see how fortunate we are in our lives. I am happy to see there is a place for people who aren’t as fortunate. It is a good reality check for us, especially when we complain that our cars aren’t handling the best.” Other drivers which visited Camp Boggy on Friday were John Pew, Robin Liddell, Andy Lally, Mark Wilkins, Joao Barbosa, Hurley Haywood, Spencer Pumpelly, Paul Edwards, Jared Beyer, Mike Forest and Jordan and Ricky Taylor.
