Honda Enthusiasts Win at Watkins Glen

TOPEKA, Kan. – Honda enthusiasts had the best showing of all fan groups at Watkins Glen and captured their second World Challenge Fan Manufacturers Championship win of 2010. The Honda fans had the best showing during the weekend’s Sports Car Wars activities which included the March To The Grid, the autograph session, the paddock gatherings, and general brand identification.

Shea Holbrook led Honda Fans to a victory.

The win by Honda fans came as a surprise to some. Driver Kevin Helms of the #04 Hondaworks Honda Civic Si, who led the Honda fans to victory in St. Pete, had to withdraw from Watkins Glen because of an injury he sustained at another racing event in June.

“We didn’t know what to expect from the Honda enthusiasts at Watkins Glen, the Hondaworks Team showed us in St. Pete that they know how to get the Honda fans out to races. But Shea Racing took the gauntlet and together with the Honda fans surprised us all,” Jason Dukes, Fan Development Consultant, Sports Car Wars.

The Shea Racing Team led by driver Shea Holbrook of the #67 Honda Civic Si had an innovative partnership with Dick Ide Honda of Rochester to support Shea’s charity, Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy. Shea appeared in many Dick Ide Honda TV spots leading up to the Watkins Glen race. Honda fans responded and came out to support their dealer, their driver, and their brand. With the upcoming race at Toronto, Shea and Honda Fans hope to repeat with a round 7 win in the Fan Manufacturers Championship.

But they will have their hands full. Corvette fans, who swept the Mosport double header, will have a full contingent out in support, along with St. Pete winner Volvo, and Long Beach winner Dodge. Porsche enthusiasts have yet to win a competition in 2010, but are set to have a strong showing. Mazda is always a threat, led by the dynamic Eric Meyer, driver of the #32 Mazda RX-8, and his fan-friendly XOWii/Samaritan’s Feet Team. The long shot that could throw a wrench into the competition is Scion. Yet to release a vehicle for sale in Canada, the Canadian and New York State Scion community is looking to support the DG Spec team of Robert Stout and Dan Gardner.

With the win at Watkins Glen, the Honda enthusiasts jump into a tie for top spot in the battle for the overall Fan Manufacturers Championship alongside the Corvette fans with two wins each. Volvo and Dodge each have one win. And with six races still to go enthusiasts from Acura, Nissan, Porsche, Scion, VW, Mazda, and Lotus still have plenty of opportunity to win the Championship.
